Vinyl

"Vinyl is flexible, durable, and cost effective ... and can be recycled." – Patrick Moore, Greenpeace cofounder

Vinyl is one of the most successful synthetic materials. Infused with plasticizers to accommodate a broad range of softness and flexibility, vinyl is strong, durable and abrasion- and moisture-resistant. It does not rust, and is electrically non-conductive with excellent fire-performance properties.

Vinyl itself is derived from fossil fuels and salt. It requires less energy to produce and generates lower carbon dioxide (C02) emissions than alternative products.

Vinyl is the most widely used plastic for building and construction applications such as siding, windows, single-ply roofing membranes, fencing, decking, wall coverings and flooring. Vinyl used in pipes contributes to delivering clean water and to the integrity of wastewater handling systems.

Vinyl is used to insulate building wire. It provides the performance required to meet stringent Underwriters Laboratory (UL) specifications and to ensure durability and a long service life.

In packaging, vinyl helps keep food safe and fresh during transportation and on store shelves, and provides tamper-resistant packaging.

Automotive applications include interior seating, instrument panel applications and exterior applications that help add years to the life of motor vehicles.

Of the estimated 30,000 plasticizers developed, used and studied over the past 100 years, ExxonMobil Chemical’s DINP (diisononyl phthalate) and DIDP (diisodecyl phthalate) plasticizers demonstrate the best balance of performance and cost-effectiveness.
