ExxonMobil Scientists Participates in U.S. Chamber of Commerce Event on Future of Automotive Technologies

HOUSTON, Texas -- January 23, 2008 --   ExxonMobil’s Chief Polymer Scientist, Dr. Pat Brant, spoke at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event today in Washington, D.C. about a new technology that is expected to help speed the adoption of lithium-ion batteries in next generation hybrid and electric vehicles.  Brant said ExxonMobil’s technology enhances the power, safety and reliability of lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications.

“Lithium-ion batteries revolutionized the small electronics industry because they are lighter and more powerful.  They are desired by automakers for the same reasons,” said Brant.  “ExxonMobil’s separator technology was specifically developed to address challenging hybrid and electric vehicle applications.  Now that we have a solution, we expect this to really take off.”

The seminar, titled “Future of Automotive Technologies,” explored promising automotive technologies and addressed how breakthroughs will affect energy markets and the economics of the transportation sector.  Brant concluded his remarks by noting other ExxonMobil technologies that are already improving the energy efficiency of today’s vehicles, including tire innerliners and lighter-weight plastics.

“ExxonMobil works closely with leading automakers and suppliers worldwide to help reduce the weight of today’s automobiles.  This improves fuel efficiency, helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers manufacturing costs,” Brant said.  “For example, lighter-weight plastics are used extensively throughout the interior and across the exterior of today’s automobiles.  It is estimated that a typical car uses about 220 pounds of plastics, replacing up to 600 pounds of metal or other heavier material.  According to the U.S. Department of Energy, every 10 percent reduction in a car’s weight improves fuel economy by 7 percent.”
